Some Name Lists

I am trying to be as historically accurate as it is possible to be while playing the Sims 4 (so not very) and that includes names. I’ve actually already chosen all the names that I’m going to use in each era because I’m weirdly organised like that. Now, I love researching stuff and I love naming things but I realise not everybody does. Luckily I also love making lists way too much so I thought I’d make this resource for anyone struggling with names. It contains links to the sites I used as well as a list of names for those who just want to get on with playing. Since I’m British, I will be focusing on Britain and the names used there.

Prehistory – Gen 0

This one was hard because the reason it’s called prehistory is because no-one had written anything down yet. What I did was look up the oldest known names but it would be just as accurate to make them up. The oldest names I could find are

Enpap-x (Sumerian, c. 3200-3101 BC)
Gal-Sal  (Sumerian, c. 3200-3101 BC)
Iry-hor (Egyptian, c. 3200 BC)
Ka (Egyptian, c. 3200 BC)
Sukkalgir (Sumerian, c. 3200-3101 BC)
Turgunu Sanga (Sumerian, c 3100 BC)

With the possible exception of Enpap-x and Sukkalgir these were almost certainly men (especially the Egyptians, who were kings) but I didn’t let that stop me. I just picked the most ‘prehistoric sounding’ and went with it.

Prehistoric – Gen 1

For this I decided to use Iron Age British names since pre-Roman Britain is counted as prehistoric and I wanted the names to be chronologically later as a sort of bridge between ‘true’ prehistory and the Early Civilisation era. I used this site for my names.

Names with an * next to them are of uncertain gender

Early Civilisation

For these names I mainly used this site and this site. I would suggest only using names from here as first names if you want to be completely historically accurate (which I probably won’t be!). I’m doing Ancient Rome for this era because it seemed like the best period for clothing but here are some Ancient Greek names and here are some Ancient Egyptian ones.

Nomina and cognomina (clan and family names) – if you find the list of praenomina too limiting feel free to use these as first names. It’s not strictly accurate but often Romans would have been known by their cognomen anyway. Just remember to feminise by replacing -us with -a.

Middle Ages

Depending on how far back you want to set your game I’ve marked pure Anglo-Saxon names like this * . Dimunutives were very commonly used as names in their own right, especially as it was common for peasant families to give all their sons/daughters the same proper name so I’ve put them in brackets. All the names can be spelled pretty much how you like, for example Gervase can also be Jarvis.

Victorian

These names can be used for both the Old West and Industrial eras. Again, lots of the Medieval and Georgian names can also be used for this period and most of these names can be used for the Colonial ere but be careful as a few only came into use during the 19th century. Names in brackets are diminutives that were also used as names in their own right.
